Cetinje

Ancient Capital.

The pearl of the Balkans immersed in greenery.

Cetinje, a blend of history and culture, is a small European capital with an extraordinary past. Still unknown to most, this small town hidden in the greenery is a rich place where nature, history, and culture intertwine.

Founded in 1482 by King Ivan Crnojevic, it has managed to capture immense beauty and preserve it to this day. A town of just under twenty thousand inhabitants, it is the cultural center of the state of Montenegro.

What to visit when you arrive in the ancient capital?

It's hard to recommend; it would be nice to have the right amount of time, and it's not the ideal destination for a quick visit. There are nine museums, an ancient monastery, beautiful palaces that served as embassies for many European countries in the early 20th century, two nearby and immense National Parks, the Lipska Cave, adventure trails, and much more.

You could start from the National Museum of Montenegro, a collection of five buildings, including the former royal palace, which contain part of this country's history and culture.

You can visit all five with a combined ticket, or even by purchasing a single one based on your interests.

You can have a guided tour in this museum, not opulent but beautiful and full of history of the Petrovic Royal family, you can feel inside the great connection with all the European kingdoms, you will find the collection of old weapons and flags from the battles with the Ottoman Empire, you can admire the artifacts and furniture donated to the Royal house from all over the world, national costumes of the members of the royal family and beautiful paintings related to the life of the Petrovic house.

It was built by King Nikola. In the second half of the last century, relics from the ancient Crnojevic Monastery were discovered beneath the church and nearby, now brought to light—a beautiful archaeological site. In 1989, the remains of King Nikola, his wife Milena, and their two daughters were transferred from Sanremo to the church. It was a historic moment. I participated in and remember this funeral procession of our royals. It was an indescribable emotion to see such a river of people and heads of state from many countries around the world in my small town.

The former residence of Prince-Bishop and poet Petar II Petrović Njegoš, it was built in 1838. The building's curious name derives from a billiard table that Njegoš II brought from Italy. Attached to the Bigliarda is a huge relief map of Montenegro, created by Austrian officers in 1917.

This museum is located in the former Government Palace and houses an important collection of paintings by famous artists. You can admire the famous icon of Our Lady of Philermos ; it is believed that this icon was painted by Saint Luke, only 15 years after the Ascension of Jesus. The museum is also a representative venue for cultural life, hosting exhibitions and events by world-renowned artists, including Dado Djuric and Marina Abramovic.
